COOKED the Play

By Angel Duggan and Lana Page

Synopsis

Set in Australian Suburbia, Logan is a woman in the midst of a crisis battling the two pillars in her life; her mum and her best friend. With her mother’s health declining, and her best friend ‘different’, this year’s Christmas isn’t feeling ‘festive’ to say the least. Logan’s will and morals are tested when her mum, her rock, begins to struggle with substance abuse. She looks to her best friend Jean for support, however a new boyfriend, who she has a ‘funny feeling about’ throws off their dynamic. With her normal route of support cut off, the play navigates Logan’s struggle to cope with these two changes. Who will she have to become in order to function? COOKED is a play about limitations, it questions how far our wills can be pushed and what happens when we think we can’t go any further.

Why we made a site:
This website serves as a portfolio of the history of this work; to concretise and track the progression of the play. This project will hopefully, in the future, have many developments and renditions.
CHARACTERS

LOGAN (twenty-two): She remembers your birthday. Tired.

JEAN (twenty-two): Cheap perfume. Funny without trying. Smokes when she’s nervous.

MUM (sixty-one): Retired. Depressed.

How it came to be

We had just done Maryland ( by Lucy Kirkwood) and a devised work at uni. We were in a long break between semesters and feeling creatively stagnant. Most of our days were spent at the beach sharing stories of how cruel (most) men are to their girlfriends and how frustrating it is to be the friend of that person. Listening and watching on as they explained the horror stories of their relationship. We started writing the play that day, based on this experience, and finished our first draft within three months.

It was a story that felt very considered, easy to write, and real to us. After doing a few development readings with friends, they assured us they felt the same. We wrote the play, but it has the voice of multiple people; real people, including ourselves. It has been crafted in collaboration with our friends and family, and it's through lengthy conversations, late-night chats and google surveys, that has made the story rich with an authentic voice.

It is our first time writing a play so we kept it simple and wrote what we knew. Put simply, it's a play about three women and their tumultuous relationships, as well as their mundane, complicated and poignant lives.

We're now onto Draft 3 of the play. We've made it short and sweet for Fringe (45 mins), however the original play is much longer and we are keen to develop it's full length in future renditions.
